RIP Gemina, the Crooked-Necked Giraffe

We went to the Santa Barbara Zoo today.  It was Sophia’s first time.  The otters were her favorite.

I wish you could more often experience the awe of a child with the contextSantaBarbaraZoo_logo (and memory) of an adult.  I wish I could remember how I felt the first time I saw a giraffe.

I mean, I think I know the sensation.  I’ve felt it in my “old enough to remember” life: when peeking over the crest of the back-side of Half Dome and seeing Yosemite Valley from that vantage point for the first time.  That rush of wonder and adrenaline when you know you’re experiencing something truly awesome.  I’ve got to imagine that that’s what I felt on my first trip to the zoo.  Or maybe I’m just reaching…

Joe got a kick out of sliding down a “grass” hill on piece of cardboard in the designated play area.  We used to do the same thing on a big hill in Guanajuato when I was 4.rachel

It was a great day.  And all due to a great person.  Rachel came through with one of the best gifts that we’ve received as a family of four.  I mean, how cool is that?!  A gift card to the zoo?!  What a perfect idea!

Thanks for getting our family out of the house this weekend.
