“Hey, Ralphie! Wait up!”

I’m kind of lazy when it comes to weekends.  Most times I’m content to just sleep in…

So when Meg saw the mountains on our horizon with a dusting of white powder and decided that we just had to go to the snow that weekend, I was (not surprisingly) reluctant.  I began to make excuses almost immediately:

“Do you even know if Frazier Park got any snow this week?”

“How do you know there will still be snow when we get there?”

Is the road even open?

My obstinance wasn’t completely unjustified – our last “on a whim” trip to Frazier Park was a complete failure.  We ended up driving through slushy rain (when we weren’t sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic) for 2 hours before being turned around because of road closure (with a 2 hour drive home ahead of us).

In the end, Meg called a town store at 8am on Saturday morning and confirmed that conditions were excellent for snow play.  I lay in bed, defeated, coming to grips with the fact that I’d be rising early (for a Saturday) and driving to Frazier Park.

Thank God for Megan.

Sophia wasn’t particularly excited about trying on her new snow gear at first, especially the mittens.  Trying to put snow glove on an infant is like trying to {not creative enough to complete this simile}.  Once she realized their purpose, she complied and got down to, well, lying motionless in the snow.  She was like Randy from “A Christmas Story.”  About the only thing she could do was hold a snowball in front of her face and take an occasional bite.  Still, she loved it.

Someone had arrived ahead of us and kindly dug out make-shift stairs to ease the ascent up the big sledding hill.  Joe and I were the first to take a crack at it.  I, like an idiot, thought it would be a good idea to tape the event using our brand-new digital camcorder.  Disaster was narrowly avoided as a flurry of snow kicked up from our “snow boogie” and covered the lens.

Meg and Joe went next.  Just watch.

For the record, I’m not the completely unsympathetic jerk that I seem in the video.

Meg and Joe collaborated on a snowman, which somehow morphed into a “snow Tigger.”  Through some happy accident, Joe picked up a perfectly-shaped Tigger head snow ball.  The artists were very pleased with the outcome.

All in all, we exhausted ourselves with a fun-filled morning/afternoon.  On the way back down the hill, I saw a familiar car pass us going up the hill. “Meg! I think that was just my Dad!”  And it was.  Go figure!

Next time, we’ll have to be sure to indulge on the El Diablo pizza at Cave Cavey’s.  If I recall correctly, it’s pretty awesome.

Aw… do we have to go already?!
